The Virtual University, Pakistan’s first University based completely on modern Information and Communication Technologies, was established by the Government as a public sector, not-for-profit institution with a clear mission: to provide extremely affordable world class education to aspiring students all over the country.

Using free-to-air satellite television broadcasts and the Internet, the Virtual University allows students to follow its rigorous programs regardless of their physical locations. It thus aims at alleviating the lack of capacity in the existing universities while simultaneously tackling the acute shortage of qualified professors in the country. By identifying the top Professors of the country, regardless of their institutional affiliations, and requesting them to develop and deliver hand-crafted courses, the Virtual University aims at providing the very best courses to not only its own students but also to students of all other universities in the country.

Abstract

Purpose: The present work is the treatment and comparative study of anemia through plant isolated compounds as compare to modern medicine. Back ground: Anemia is one of the common disease affecting people of all ages associated with decrease in number of Red Blood Cells. Anemia is of many types and are caused by inflammation or nutritional deficiencies. Synthetic medicinal treatment are found to be toxic and very expensive. This disorder treated with synthetic compounds and modern medicines affect the hemoglobin molecule. Many therapeutic techniques such as hydroxyurea, bone marrow transplantation, and blood transfusion are found very expensive and the masses cannot afford them in addition expose the patient to mutagenicity and other fatal risks. In many countries herbal treatment is found to be very common and a lot of research is going to be done on plants that can cure anemia. Methodology: In present research female albino Wister rats weighing about 200 g were purchased from animal house, research institute of Agha Khan University Karachi Pakistan were categorized into six groups, as Control group CG, Model group MG while treated were grouped as TGB, TGC, TGD and TGM. Model animal were first make anemic by blood loss from their tails at daily basis. Then treated groups were treated with ethanolic extracts of Beta vulgaris, Coriandrum sativum, Daucus carota and Modern Medicines (Vidyline N).These were orally administered at 80mg/kg weight of rats. Behavioral study was examined. After treatment for 40 days all were decapitate and biochemical and haematological analysis of blood samples were done. Statistical analysis was also performed following students t test with 0.05 cut off value. Results: Model created in almost 25 days show decrease in RBC,HGB, HCT, MCH, PLT while increase in WBC, MCH and NEUT. Model groups treated for 40 days by different samples gave different results. The present study shows that carrot extract significantly cause increase in WBC and RBCs . Beta vulgaris and Coriandrum sativum extract significantly improve HGB. Medicine significantly decrease the HCT and NEUT. Coriandrum sativum decrease the MCV as compare to other samples. Daucus carota extract cause decrease in MCH and increase in PLT significantly. Behavioral study shows that when they become anemic they show significantly decreases in their stimulatory, locomotory motion, spending time in light box while their activities improve on treatment. Lipid profile analysis concluded that present samples show decrease in lipid profile indicating, decrease in cardiovascular diseases , in addition creatinine level also decreased. Conclusion: In present study, it is concluded that carrot seems to be best as compare to other samples used in combating anemia and reducing lipid profile level. In addition plants used are safe an easily available to common person. In present research we dose not find any side effects of plant isolated compounds. There is further need to investigate that what are the compounds in plants that are effective in combating anemia and then these compounds after isolation should be used in medicines as herbal medicines to be used for population to cure anemia and cardiovascular diseases.
